Solvent Extraction

Aromatic plant materials are gently heated in organic solvents, removing the scented compounds and natural plant dyes present in the material. This produces a fragrant, richly-coloured wax-like concrete, which is then washed in alcohol, removing the plant waxes, and leaving us with an incredibly concentrated absolute.

CO2 Extraction

A low-temperature high-pressure extraction process, where CO2 is turned to liquid in order to extract the scented volatile elements from the fragrant raw materials. The fluid CO2 is then returned to a gas state, leaving only the scented constituents behind.

Fractional Extraction

In order to refine or separate olfactively interesting elements from fragrant extracts, an oil or absolute is heated. Once a specific temperature and pressure is reached, the desired element is drawn off and isolated.

Cold Expression

Typically used for citrus fruits, the skin of the fruit is either pressed in a machine that squeezes the essential oil out, or grated in a machine which creates an emulsion of oil and water that is subsequently centrifuged and purified to extract the essential oil.

Steam Distillation

Fragrant raw materials are heated in or above water, removing the scented components through the steam. The steam is condensed in a cooling column, separating into an essential oil and a hydrosol (the name for the remaining water), which in the same instances can be further extracted.

Fragrance Concentrations

Eau de Parfum

An Eau de Parfum is amongst the highest concentrations of fragrance, usually dosed between 15% and 20% in alcohol. Typically Eau de Parfum focuses on the heart and base notes of the composition, for fullness and rich complexity.

Eau de Toilette

Eau de Toilette is usually based on the top and heart notes of a composition, for an intense burst of fragrance with a slightly fresher character.

Fragrance Pyramid

A fragrance pyramid describes the aspects of a fragrance you experience as it develops over time.
The ‘top’ notes are the most impactful – predominant when you first smell the fragrance. The ‘heart’ notes are medium in volatility, creating the overall character and determining the development of the scent. The ‘base’ notes act to provide richness, warmth and structure – the depth of the fragrance.
As you wear a fragrance, the top notes will fade, then slowly the heart notes, leaving mostly the base notes as a lasting impression on the skin.
